The Daily Office During Easter 2008
About this webpage
This page has only one aim, and that is to help as many people as
possible to be able to join in the great prayer of the church which is the
Divine Off ice of the Roman Catholic Church. This facility is aimed at lay
people, but might also be of use to those training for the Deaconate, or
considering other religious orders. In short it is to help as many people
as possible to say as much of the Daily Office as they would like, as
often as they can. The page is put together by a lay person, with other
lay help, and so does not pretend to carry any authority of the church,
but is simply the guide that I wished that I had when I started saying
Morning Evening and Night Prayer myself some years ago.
This web page started as an ongoing sheet for helping parishioners at
Our Lady Queen of Heaven, Frimley, in the diocese of Arundel and Brighton
to be able to say Morning and Evening prayer at home or in the church when
our Parish Priest is not present. Just over a year ago this page was added
to the Marist website. We continue to maintain it here because the "hit"
statistics suggest that hundreds of you are visiting this page every
month. This is both excellent news, and suggests that this page is
probably fulfilling a need.
Please give me your feedback
As yet we have no idea of who is using this page and whether it best
suits your needs. For example, we have no way of telling whether you are
also from Arundel and Brighton, or whether from much wider afield.
Therefore we dont really know whether you want to see our feast days
only, or if on our feast days, you need the details for the rest of the
church in England and Wales. This may seem an odd point, but it occurred
to me in March this year when I realised that we celebrated St Patricks
day, St Josephs day, and the Solemnity of the Annunciation on different
days in A&B from (for example) Westminster.
If you have a moment, and you use this website, please email me at
jezpreece@hotmail.com
and tell me the following.
First, the most important information:
Your diocese
Which version of the Morning and Evening Prayer book you use (i.e.,
Morning and Evening prayer book, Daily Prayer, or full breviary). Are
we giving you the right page numbers for your version of your book?
How often you use this website, e.g. every day to look up the
office, occasionally to see if there are any feast days, or around
"the complicated times" such as Easter and Christmas. As yet we do not
know whether you are from England, Wales or even beyond.
If you have the time you might also be able to help me further by
telling me:
Whether there is too much or not enough explanation on this site
If you would like further reading suggestions about the daily
office, or if you have any recommendations of good books, or websites
about the Daily Office that we should link to.
Any suggestions for this site, or anything that you found difficult
about Morning and Evening Prayer and think we might be able to
explain.
Finally, the following would be helpful to me, but only if you are
happy to share it:
Which offices you say, for example you might say just Night Prayer,
or you might say Morning Prayer but only on certain days of the week,
or if you have been saying the Office for a while and want to keep up
with the variations of the seasons and Feasts, or if you are new to
saying the Office.
For the future. I would be interested to know if you feel the need
for any information about the remainder of the Divine Office, such as
the Office of Readings or Prayer during the day. At present these are
not covered here.
However, even if only to answer the first part, I would be really
grateful to hear from you. Thank you.
The Daily Office During Easter 2008
Alleluia He is Risen!!!
Welcome to the Easter Season. And it is apparently the earliest Easter
for nearly 100 years!
Easter Season
The Easter Season is "the Great Sunday" a continuous "day" of
celebration spread over 50 days, including Ascension Day and concluding
with Pentecost.
Main events of Easter:
Easter Octave: Easter Sunday (23rd March) to "Low Sunday"
(30th March)
Eastertide 1: The period of Eastertide before Ascension Day
Ascension Day: Sunday 4th May. Note that this is the first
year in England and Wales that Ascension Day is celebrated on the 7th
Sunday of the Easter Season as opposed to the Thursday of the sixth week
Eastertide 2: The period from Ascension to Pentecost
Pentecost Sunday: Last day of the Easter Season. Sunday May 11th
This purpose of this guide
The daily office is the Liturgical Prayer of the church, and is also
know as the Liturgy of the Hours. This is set out in the full 3-volume
breviary. Vatican II identified Morning and Evening Payer as the key
hinges of the divine office. The council really wanted to encourage as
many laity as possible to share in Morning, Evening or at least Night
Prayer.
This guide is to help anyone who wants to say Morning Evening and/or
Night prayer either in the church, or at home if they possess the Morning
and Evening Prayer book.
While many people who say Morning and Evening Prayer enjoy
participating in the churchs liturgy in such a very profound way, most
will agree that it is not easy at first to find your way around the book.
Some days are particularly complex, and the seasons such as Eastertide are
not what we might call intuitive. Most people, who have said the office
for a while, feel that they "get the hang of it", although we all still
get caught out from time to time. As stated earlier, this guide is simply
my idea of what I would have liked when I started saying the office.
Pope Benedict XVI on the Daily Office
Pope Benedict XVI delivered "Sacramentum Caritatis" on the Eucharist on
22nd February 2007, which was published in March 07. In it, the
importance of the daily office is reinforced.
In Paragraph 45, the pope emphasises the importance of the Daily Office
in terms of the scriptural content as well as being part of the prayer of
the church. Quoting St Jerome "ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of
Christ", the passage goes on, "To this end, the faithful should be helped
to appreciate the riches of Sacred Scripture found in the lectionary
through pastoral initiatives, liturgies of the word and reading in the
context of prayer (lectio divina). Efforts should also be made to
encourage those forms of prayer confirmed by tradition, such as the
Liturgy of the Hours, especially Morning Prayer, Evening Prayer and Night
Prayer, and vigil celebrations. By praying the Psalms, the Scripture
readings and the readings drawn from the great tradition which are
included in the Divine Office, we can come to a deeper experience of the
Christ-event and the economy of salvation, which in turn can enrich our
understanding and participation in the celebration of the Eucharist."
The Basic Pattern of Morning and Evening Prayer during Easter
Morning and Evening Prayer is based on a 4-week Psalter, which is
suspended for the first week of Eastertide the Easter Octave. Each week
begins with Evening Prayer I for Sunday, which is said on the Saturday
evening in much the same way as the first Mass of Sunday can be celebrated
on Saturday evening. In Easter the weeks are:
Easter Sunday to Low Sunday - Special offices for Easter Sunday,
are used but with specific readings for each day of the Octave
2nd Monday of Easter (31st March) the
following Saturday Week 2
3rd Sunday of Easter (April 6th) the
following Saturday Week 3
4th Sunday of Easter (April 13th) - the
following Saturday Week 4
5th Sunday of Easter (April 20th) the
following Saturday - Week 1
6th Sunday of Easter (April 27th) the
following Saturday Week 2
Ascension Day Now Sunday 4th May. Special office.
Week 7 of Easter Monday 5th Saturday 10th
May Week 3. This week is Eastertide 2
Pentecost Sunday 11th May, Special Office
During the first week of Easter, the Octave, the first part of the
office for Easter Sunday is used, and the rest of the office is given for
each day of the octave. The Psalter is suspended until the second Sunday
of Easter
The Psalter has a hymn, three psalms (actually one of them is a
canticle) and then there is a sequence (headed "THROUGH THE YEAR") that
starts with the scripture reading ends with the concluding prayer.
In Eastertide (and other seasons), we only use the psalms and canticle
in the Psalter; there is a separate place for the opening hymn (P1118
P1121 for Easter 1 P1122 1125 for Eastertide 2) and the rest of the
office from the scripture reading onwards is taken from the Proper of
Seasons. For Eastertide, Monday week 2 until Saturday week 6 is given from
P231 - 263).
When there are particular days
This pattern is interrupted when there is a saints day or other
special day. What happens then depends on the importance of the day.
Although complex, this is something that you get a feel for with practice.
Basically there are:
Memoria days which if "optional" you can just ignore, (unless it is a
saint with whom you have a particular affinity). In
this guide, the parts of the office for a optional memoria day is in red
text. If not optional, a Memoria can be celebrated as a
"commemoration", where we substitute the concluding prayer with the one
appointed in the proper of saints for the day, and the Benedictus and
Magnificat antiphon if one is given in the Proper of Saints. Alternatively
there is an option to use all of the whole office for a memoria day from
the relevant common offices. At OLQH we tend to commemorate Memoria days.
On Sundays Memorias are ignored.
Feasts are more important than memorias, and on feast days we suppress
the Psalter. Some of the office is set out in the proper of saints
(General calendar) and the rest is in what we call the common offices, so
for example if there is a the feast of a saint who was a pastor, then the
proper of saints will have probably the Benedictus and Magnificent
antiphons and the concluding prayer, and you are referred for the rest of
the office to the common of pastors. Feasts are also ignored if their date
falls on a Sunday. (Exceptions to this rule "Feasts of Our Lord" for
example the Transfiguration on August 6th but not this year).
Solemnities are major days and have evening prayer I and II, just like
we have Saturday Evening first office and Mass of the following Sunday. In
ordinary time solemnities take precedence over Sundays.
Dont worry if this all seems totally confusing, it should make more
sense with practice.
How do I know when there are special days?
The Proper of Saints is set out as a calendar, January to December, in
the Morning and Evening Prayer book. However there are a few things to
watch out for:
There are new saints who have specific days but are not yet shown
in the book
The calendar does not help you where certain solemnities etc. are
transferred to another date.
The parish newsletter is really helpful here, as is the diocesan
yearbook. However any page numbers given in the diocesan yearbook are for
the large three-volume whole office breviary used by clergy and (some)
religious orders.
Night Prayer
Unlike the other offices, Night prayer is really simple and is based on
a one week cycle instead of four week. It changes very little throughout
the year, so it is often a good starting point as you try to get into
saying the office.
Night prayer begins with
"Oh God come to our aid
Oh Lord, make haste to help us
Glory be
"
It is customary to then make an act of contrition
A hymn is then said; there is a selection to choose from P680 - P684,
or you can really choose any.
Then the office for the day is said (Sunday I on Saturday Night) P689
P708
(On solemnities then Sunday I and II is used as with a Sunday)
We also use the Sunday Night prayer every day in the Easter Octave.
Finally it is usual to end with an antiphon to the Virgin Mary, there are
P685 - P688 and at Easter we select one of those with Alleluia.
On the rare occasions where there is anything different, it will be
pointed out in the week-by-week listings, and prefixed with a *.

There are two Solemnities that are transferred from their usual dates,
when they would have happened in Holy Week and Easter week: St Joseph on
Monday (normally 19th March) and the Annunciation on Tuesday
(normally 25th March).
I have recently found out that the Vatican instruction that they be
transferred to a close date has been followed differently in different
dioceses. Therefore you will need to check this Monday and Tuesday, to see
what your diocese is doing. What follows here is true for Arundel and
Brighton.
Monday 31st March Solemnity of St Joseph (husband of the
Blessed Virgin Mary)
Morning Prayer: Office P751 753 Psalms of Sunday week 1 P390 - 394
Evening Prayer: Office P753 754 Hymn as at Morning Prayer (P751)

2nd Week of Eastertide
Note that the Easter Octave ended on Sunday, and on Wednesday we return
to the Psalter, since it is the second week of Easter it is Psalter
week 2. Be aware that there are antiphons for Eastertide throughout
the Psalter. Generally, for the next few weeks the pattern is to start
with a hymn for Easter, follow the Psalter with the Easter Antiphons and
then go to the proper of seasons, and follow the cycle for weeks 1 7
using the antiphon, intercession and concluding prayer for the
corresponding week. This pattern is subject to interruption for various
saints days etc.
