The Daily Office During Lent 2010 

Key Points

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday 17th February and ends at the Easter Tridium, Maundy Thursday  Evening 1st April.

  • From Ash Wednesday to the following Saturday, week 4 of the Psalter is used, this is not classed as the first week of Lent
  • The following week Sunday 21st – Saturday 27th February is week 1 of Lent, and the Psalter for week 1 is used.
  • Throughout Lent for ordinary ferial days, and memoria days, there are hymns for Lent, followed by the Psalms and canticle from the Psalter, and then the remainder of the office is from the proper of the season.
  • Memoria days are always celebrated as a commemoration, when the appropriate the Benedictus or Magnificat antiphon, and the concluding prayer from the proper of saints are substituted.
  • There are no Alleluias said during Lent, and on Evening Prayer II of Sunday the Lent alternative 3rd Psalm is used.

 

  • There are no changes to Night Prayer during Lent.

Holy Week and Easter Triduum

There are a few important differences to note in the office during Holy Week and the Easter Triduum:

  • There are antiphons for every day of Holy Week in the Psalter
  • There is no Evening Prayer on Maundy Thursday if you attend the Mass of the Lord’s Supper. An Evening Prayer is given only for those who cannot attend
  • There is no evening Prayer on Good Friday if you attend the Afternoon Liturgy. An Evening prayer is given only for those who cannot attend
  • There are changes to Night prayer, and the form for Sunday 2 is used from Maundy each day until the end of the Easter Octive
  • There is an antiphon said at Night prayer on Thursday, Friday and Saturday to replace the responsory
  • There is no Night Prayer for those who attend the Vigil

*Night Prayer This year Night Prayer will be said publicly in Church at the Alter of Repose at 11:45 pm. Night Prayer as of Sunday 2, but with the following to replace the responsory:

Friday 2nd April Good Friday
