Dear
Friends
We are
almost at the end of the first month of 2011 and I am delighted to note
that the evenings are getting lighter – a wonderful reminder to us that we
belong to Christ who is our light. Francis de Sales was greatly admired by
our founder, Jean-Claude Colin, is one of the patrons of the Society of
Mary. His feast day is 24th January. He wrote in his
“Introduction to the Devout Life”:
“The
practice of devotion must differ for the gentleman and the artisan, the
servant and the prince, for widow, young girl or wife. Further it must be
adapted to their particular strength, circumstance, and duties.
Is the solitary life of a
Carthusian suited to a bishop? Should those who are married practice the
poverty of a Capuchin? If workmen spent as much time in church as
religious, if religious were exposed to the same pastoral calls as a
bishop, such devotion would be ridiculous and cause intolerable disorder.
Yet, this foolish mistake is often
made. True devotion never causes harm, but rather perfects everything we
do; a devotion which conflicts with anyone’s state of life is undoubtedly
false.”
It is
very easy to see why Francis de Sales was a favourite of Jean-Claude Colin
especially since he famously commented: "You
will catch more flies with a spoonful of honey rather than a barrel of
vinegar.”

maristway.org is definitely worth visiting on the internet. Recently a
very interesting report of the Marist Day in Walsingham had been added
along with a pictorial report of Swanwick. We had an interesting ‘con’ –
we were contacted by people in China claiming rights over the name “Marist
Way” and demanding that we register with them. Our provider assured us
that this is one of the present tricks being used.

Fr
Norman Arkwright I was able to visit Norman
recently. He has now been moved to a nursing home in Clitheroe and is
making slow but sure progress and he thanks you for all your prayers and
good wishes.
The Provincial of Oceania, Fr Paul Donoghue, has asked our
prayers to Fr Colin, seeking his intercession with the Lord on behalf of
Brother Mua Saurava, who made his first profession in the Society in
December 2008, and has now been told he has cancer. Medical care is not an
option, and Mua is being given palliative care. All confreres are invited
to join the members of the Oceania Province in their prayer for Mua:
Most Holy
Trinity, if it is in accordance with your Most Holy Will that your
servant, our Founder Jean Claude Colin should be glorified by the Church,
show us the favour he enjoys in Your sight by granting us the grace we now
ask of you through his intercession, that you grant to our confrere,
Brother Mua Saurava, a miraculous cure from his terminal illness and
restore him to our community in good health and well‐being.
