Dear Friends

EASTER is a wonderful feast and the centre of our faith. "Christ’s example in dying for us sinners teaches us that we must carry the cross, which the flesh and the world inflict on the shoulders of all who seek justice and peace.

Constituted Lord by his resurrection and possessing all authority in heaven and on earth, Christ is now at work in the hearts of men by the power of his Spirit; not only does he arouse in them a desire for the world to come but he invigorates, purifies, strengthens the generous aspirations of mankind to make life more humane and conquer the earth for this purpose." (VAT II. The Church in the Modern World. 38) Simply join in the prayer of the day: "On this day, Lord God, you opened for us the way to eternal life through your only Son’s victory over death. Grant that as we celebrate the feast of his resurrection we may be renewed by your Holy Spirit and rise again in the light of life."

MARIST CELEBRATION On 11th March 1967 Clive Birch SM and Noel Wynn SM knelt before Rt. Rev. Cyril Restieaux, the Bishop of Plymouth, in Paignton parish church and were ordained. Unknown to them, far north in Hull, Brian and Maureen Salmon were married on the same day by Fr Charlie Wilde in St Vincent’s church. Their paths were to cross in later years and so it was fitting to celebrate together on their Fortieth Anniversary. This proved to be a memorable Marist celebration. Over fifty years ago Brian’s dad, a French polisher by trade, had actually bees-waxed the ceiling in the, then, new church of Our Lady of Lourdes and Saint Peter Chanel. Celebration and Thanksgiving was the theme of the 12.00 noon mass and there was plenty to celebrate and to give thanks to God for. The parish choir led the congregation in the opening hymn "I the Lord of sea and sky". Mrs Pat O’Connor read the first reading and Michael Wynn, Noel’s brother, after a very appropriate psalm, "My soul proclaims the Lord my God", the second. Fr John Collier SM read the gospel and Fr Michael Coleman SM contributed some words appropriate for the occasion.

TURIN CONFERENCE "A European gathering of members of the Marist Way and Laity Thursday 23rd / Sunday 26th August". At the moment 16 members have booked and we intend to make a "Marist Origins" pilgrimage on the way home, arriving Friday 31st August. Details have to be finalised, but we anticipate a final cost of around £550.00. This should prove to be a wonderful experience. Places are limited so contact me a.s.a.p.!!
