On Sunday, September 28, twenty-five parishioners from St Patrick’s Church Hill took part in a special pilgrimage walk from Bradfield Park, Milsons Point, across the Harbour Bridge, and on to St Patrick’s.
The day began with an acknowledgment of the Gadigal people, the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we gathered. Margaret Woods then led the pilgrimage, recalling the 800 steps taken by the first Marists on their journey to Lyon in France. As we walked across the Harbour Bridge, breathtaking views opened before us, sparking rich and heartfelt conversations. In true Marist fashion, these conversations shaped the spirit of our journey.
On arrival at St Patrick’s, participants were welcomed with a feast of pizza, cake, fruit, and hot drinks before gathering for reflection led by Margaret Woods. She shared a striking insight: although 90% of parishioners do not live locally, many travel from across Sydney because they have made St Patrick’s their spiritual home. Margaret highlighted the vibrant life already present in the parish Alpha groups, Bible studies, Choir, and the Homeless Breakfasts each weekend, and invited everyone to weave the Marist charism into the groups and ministries in which they are involved.
Margaret challenged us not to let the departure of the Marist Fathers in December 2025 to simply pass by, but instead to actively embrace and carry forward the Marist spirit that has flourished here for 157 years.
As we look towards 2026 and beyond, we invite you to be part of the conversation about how our Marist spirit can continue to grow. Please share your thoughts by completing the following survey:
What part of the pilgrimage experience—walking, conversation, reflection, or hospitality—spoke most deeply to you, and why?
How can you personally embody the Marist spirit of “thinking, feeling, and acting like Mary” in your daily life?
The Marist Fathers are leaving after 157 years. How might this change be an invitation for you to take greater ownership of your faith journey?
Margaret Woods reminded us that 90% of parishioners travel from outside the area. What draws you to call St Patrick’s your spiritual home?
Which of the parish’s existing ministries (Alpha, Bible study, Homeless Breakfast, etc.) inspires you most, and how could you become more involved?
In what ways can the Marist charism be integrated into the groups and communities you already belong to?
Looking ahead to 2026, what is one concrete step you can take to ensure the Marist legacy continues to flourish at St Patrick’s?

Final Prayer
Loving God, we thank You for the gift of the Marist Fathers and the 157 years of faith, service, and guidance they have shared at St Patrick’s. As we look to the road ahead, may we continue to walk in Mary’s way—pondering, treasuring, and saying “yes” to Your call in our lives. Strengthen us to build community, to serve the poor and vulnerable, and to carry forward the Marist spirit with courage and joy. May Your Spirit guide us as we shape the future of this parish, so that St Patrick’s may always remain a spiritual home and oasis of faith, hope, and love. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
