   - Were the Olympics Worth It

   - Father Jim

Father Jim’s homily began with a reflection on the 25th anniversary of the Sydney Olympic Games. He recalled the enormous effort that went into making the Games successful: new infrastructure, tens of thousands of volunteers, and even shifting school holidays and savings schedules. While the event was a triumph, he remembered a wise friend remarking, “Imagine if we put that same effort into solving problems like homelessness, child poverty, or mental illness.” This thought set the tone for the deeper spiritual challenge—where and how we choose to invest our time, money, and energy.

Linking this reflection to the Gospel, Father Jim explored the parable of the dishonest steward in Luke 16. Though the steward’s actions appear questionable, Jesus’ message is clear: even money, a flawed and temporary resource, can and should be used for purposes of lasting value—building relationships and orienting our lives toward heaven. He reminded the congregation that discipleship and financial choices are not separate; the way we use money is an integral part of our spiritual life. The Gospel challenges Christians to direct resources toward what truly matters, such as justice, compassion, and care for the vulnerable.

Finally, Father Jim connected this teaching to the mission of the Church, drawing on Pope Leo’s recent words that the Pope’s role is not to solve every problem, but to spread the Gospel. When people live out the Gospel, many of the world’s problems are addressed along the way. He encouraged the parish to imagine what transformation might happen if we poured the same effort as the Olympics into sharing the good news. Concluding with an appeal to cultivate generosity, Father Jim reminded the faithful that even small acts of giving can make a real difference now, while also shaping us into more faithful disciples who live generously as part of our spiritual journey.

Journal and reflect on the following
  1. Why did Father Jim begin his homily with a reflection on the Sydney Olympics, and what lesson was he drawing from that event?

  2. What was the “wise friend’s” challenge after the Games, and how does it connect to issues like homelessness, poverty, and mental illness?

  3. In the parable of the dishonest steward (Luke 16), what lesson does Jesus teach about the use of money and resources?

  4. How does Father Jim explain the link between Christian discipleship and financial choices?

  5. What did Pope Leo mean when he said that the Pope’s role is not to solve the world’s problems but to spread the Gospel?

  6. How might the world, the Church, or even our local community look different if people devoted the same energy to spreading the Gospel as Sydney did to hosting the Olympics?

  7. In what ways can we personally cultivate generosity today, even if our financial means feel limited?

Final Prayer

Loving God,
you call us to use all that we have—our time, our talents, our resources—for what truly matters. As we remember the passion and sacrifice poured into events like the Olympics, inspire us to pour even greater energy into building your Kingdom: serving the poor, healing the brokenhearted, spreading your Gospel, and living generously. Teach us to hold money and possessions lightly, and to direct them toward love, justice, and compassion, so that our lives may bear witness to your goodness and help transform our world into a place of hope and peace. Amen.
